RSCC Mission Statement
The Road Soldiers Cycling Club of the Ohio Veterans Home began in 1996 for the purpose of promoting cycling among the Home´s domiciliary members. A number of years later, when a former cyclist had become electric scooter-bound, a second organization was formed to promote the interests of and recreational use of scooters and wheelchairs by wheeled members of the Home. Both of these organizations have thrown their lots together, and a full season of off-campus rides is done in unison from April into October with the transportation and dietary support of the Home.
The primary purpose of these clubs is to ride and to enjoy a positive fellowship in many of Ohio´s scenic natural areas. The secondary purpose is to promote increased knowledge of cycling/scooter mechanics, rider skills, and physical fitness among the members.
The clubs maintain a fleet of club-owned vehicles that OVH members may borrow after signing a User Contract. These include: 10 bikes, 4 adult trikes, and 4 four-wheel electric scooters. These are provided free of charge to any OVH members who are able to safely ride as a service of the clubs to the Home. However, many, if not most, club members currently own their own bikes or scooters. The personal ownership of bikes/trikes or scooters by club members is encouraged by the clubs.
The OVH supports the mission of the clubs by providing logistical support in the form of passenger vans and a trailer, staff time, equipment storage room and dietary provisions. Many trail judicatories, county park districts, state and federal park and wildlife agencies all make our rides into Ohio´s scenic byways possible. The clubs are grateful for all these resources and supports.
